Empowering the Future of India’s Apparel and Home Furnishing Sector
It is both an honour and a profound responsibility to assume the role of Chairman of the Apparel, Made-Ups and Home Furnishing Sector Skill Council (AMHSSC). At this defining juncture, the vision is to enable a decisive transformation—evolving India’s workforce from a largely traditional labour base into a future-ready, globally competitive talent ecosystem.
As the second-largest employer after agriculture, the sector supports over 45 million livelihoods and contributes nearly 2% to India’s GDP. While its scale is formidable, the true opportunity lies in transitioning from volume-led manufacturing to value-driven growth anchored in precision, innovation, and design excellence.
The leadership vision is anchored in three strategic priorities. First, to embed future-ready competencies within the skilling framework by integrating global quality standards, efficient production methodologies, and sustainable practices—ensuring that the workforce is not only employable but globally relevant.
Second, to accelerate the integration of advanced technologies. Focus areas include AI-enabled production systems, smart manufacturing, digital design platforms, and 3D prototyping. These interventions are critical to enhancing productivity, optimising resources, and aligning with evolving global benchmarks.
To support this transformation, AMHSSC is expanding Centres of Excellence as hubs for advanced training, innovation, and applied research—bridging the gap between technological advancement and workforce preparedness.
Third, to strengthen ecosystem-wide collaboration. Deeper alignment between industry, academia, training institutions, and government will ensure a responsive, demand-driven skilling ecosystem where every certified individual is equipped for immediate and meaningful employment.
With India’s textile exports projected to reach USD 100 billion by 2030, the sector stands at a moment of strategic significance. By harmonising India’s rich heritage of craftsmanship with cutting-edge technology and contemporary design, there is a clear pathway to global leadership.
This vision calls for collective resolve. Through sustained collaboration and a shared commitment to excellence, we can build a resilient, inclusive, and future-oriented workforce—translating India’s inherent strengths into enduring global competitiveness.
As India’s apparel and home furnishing sector evolves, the need for a future-ready, skilled workforce has never been more critical. At Apparel, Made-Ups and Home Furnishing Sector Skill Council, we are committed to bridging the skill gap by aligning training with industry demands, integrating technology, and promoting sustainable practices. Our focus is on empowering youth with not just technical expertise, but also adaptability and innovation to thrive in a rapidly changing global landscape. By fostering strong industry-academia partnerships and creating inclusive skilling ecosystems, we aim to strengthen India’s position as a global leader in textiles while contributing to economic growth and employment generation.
